# About Us
**Assembly Roxy is a vibrant performing arts venue, situated in the heart of Edinburgh's Old Town. Home to comedy, theatre, circus, spoken word, ceilidhs and more, creativity brings life to our historic former church.**
Assembly was born in 1981, when our founder and artistic director William Burdett-Coutts took on the iconic Assembly Rooms to present a curated hub of shows at Edinburgh Fringe. Since then, Assembly has spread it's wings across five locations across the August Festival, becoming one of the most prestigious production companies at the Fringe.
Assembly Roxy became our year round home in 2010, since which hundreds of acts and thousands of guests have crossed through our iconic gothic doorways.
Built to replace a former chapel in 1908, Assembly Roxy boasts impressive gothic architecture. Roxy Upstairs, was initially built by Thomas Ross as a Sunday School and with it's raked seating retains much of it's old-school charm. The main church hall, which now forms Roxy Central, was completed by Peter MacGregor in 1913, at which time it was one of the busiest churches in Edinburgh.
